A Margarita by any other name…

Today is National Margarita Day…  Ohhhhh yessssssss…  Mmmmmmmm….

I love me some Margaritas.  Of allllll kinds.  Yup.

I cannot think of Margaritas anymore without thinking of my Navy Mom friends…  Back when the SIL was at boot camp at Great Lakes, I met this great group of ladies on the a web site for mothers (and wives, girlfriends and we even had dads) with kids in the Navy.  Not just at boot, but everywhere!  Anyhow, we got to know one another and we still are in touch.  Mainly via Facebook.  These relationships during the time the kids were at boot got me through what was a truly trying time.  I originally got on Navy Moms for my daughter.  She was having such a hard time dealing with him being gone that I was looking for a way to help her through it.  What I found there not only helped her but it helped me too.  Being on Navy Moms was an eye-opening experience for me.  I had NO idea what these men and women go through, endure…  to serve our country.  I know now.  And, as I have said before…  I stand in awe.

But, yet again…  I have digressed.  There were a few stressful evenings on Navy Moms.  Nights when we got news of things that had happened that week.  Good and bad.  Nights when we knew there were milestones in their progress toward that eagerly anticipated “I’m a Sailor” call.  And the big ONE…  the night of Battle Stations…  on these nights…  we had ‘ritas.  Not in person mind you.  But virtually.  Me at my computer with my ‘rita and they at theirs.

You know what was amazing about that?  We were all over this nation.  Connected at the time by what we were experiencing.  Before technology, this would not have been possible.  We shared highs and lows.  Even daily struggles that had nothing to do with the Navy.  We got each other through.

After the “I’m a Sailor” call…  and we all celebrated with one another…  we all packed our bags and headed to Great Lakes for graduation!  We were finally going to meet in person.  And guess what we did?  We went and had ‘ritas the night before we finally got to see the new Sailors graduate!  Yup…  ’ritas.

So in honor of all my Navy Mom friends (I hope you get to see this) and National Margarita Day…  here are a few of my personal favorite Margarita Recipes!  I hope you enjoy them.

Oh, as a PS…  ’ritas also remind me of San Diego.  When visiting the SIL and MD we go to Old Town to a Mexican restaurant called Cafe Coyote.  They have some of the best damned Margaritas I have ever had.  I “like”-d them on Facebook and today (it should be noted) they are offering $5 Margaritas alllllll dayyyyyy looooonnngggggg….

This first recipe is my very favorite-est.  No kidding.  It’s soooo simple.  And one of the BEST Margarita recipes I have tried.  Hands down.

Not so Traditional Margaritas

1- 12 oz. can frozen Limeade (I defrost mine on the countertop or in the sink)

12 oz. White Tequila

4 oz. Triple Sec

Lime Wedges

Ice

Pour the Limeade, Tequila and Triple Sec in to a blender.  Add ice to fill blender to top.  Put on the lid and blend until smooth.

Tips for this recipe are:

I measure the Tequila in the empty Limeade can because the can is 12 oz., I also measure the Triple sec in the empty Limeade can only filling it a quarter of the way.

If you like a salted rim on your glass…  I like to cut a slit in a lime wedge (as if you were garnishing your glass with it) and run it around the entire rim of the glass to wet it.

Then turn it upside down on a plate filled with salt.  Additionally, you can add a handful of berries (of any kind) to this recipe when blending to make a fruit Margarita.  We have done seeded watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, and blackberries.  Or, trade out the Triple Sec for Blue Curaco to make Blue Margaritas!

 Grapefruit Margaritas

1 cup Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice (100% Juice)

1/2 cup Lime Juice (I buy the bottled kind but feel free to squeeze your own if you like)

1 cup Triple Sec

1 cup White Tequila

Lime Wedges

Ice

Pour Grapefruit Juice, Lime Juice, Triple Sec and Tequila in to a blender.  Add ice to fill blender to top.  Blend until smooth.

Tips for this recipe:

Use only Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice, anything else may be too tart.  You can salt the rim of the glass if you wish as explained in the above recipe or just sprinkle a little salt directly into the drink if you wish.  When I make this one or the one above, I some times serve them on the rocks instead of blended.  If you would like to do this… Skip the blender and just put all the liquid ingredients into a pitcher and stir.  Put ice in your glass and pour the Margarita over the ice.  This is just as good a way to enjoy a Margarita as any.

We served these with chips and salsa…  YUM!

So, go out get some ‘ritas stuffs, some chips and salsa and celebrate National Margarita Day!  Let me know what you tried and if you loved it!  I think you will!

Salute! or…  Ole!  Or….  something!
